(* ̄(エ) ̄*) Bear Blog ≠ Cohost (that's a GOOD thing!) -  Re: Why Bearblog needs to stay small

This is a friendly reply to "Why Bearblog needs to stay small by triedwharf". Idk why, just kind of wanted to reply. It got my noggin' joggin'. Unironically. I'm also wildin' rn fr fr no cap.

Bear is a really good platform - better than a lotta peeps (that's PEOPLE to you OLD folx (folx is the new folks btw (sorry for all (I kind of like parethesis) of the parens within parens (they're fun)) realize. Ok, here's da blog.

Bearblog needs to stay small to survive due to a few reasons: Firstly, if everyone made a blog and Bear became super popular, one of two things would happen.

The first scenario is that Bear goes the way of cohost, and shuts down.

Doubt. Herman knows how to manage hosting costs. Bear Blog is also super minimalist by design. He doesn't have paid devs. It's just him. This site barely has image support and I love it.

While the second one is that Herman sells Bear to a soulless company and it loses the Bear magic.

Nah. I don't see this being a site someone would buy. Even if that happened, someone could just fork this site's GitHub repo. It's all there. Though, you really wouldn't need to fork something as bare (BEAR??) bones as bear blog (BLOG??). You'd just need a static site generator/blog platform with Herman's awesome CSS trick for tracking likes and a discovery page. Plus you can just got to Settings | Export all blog data and get all of your stuff off of here whenever you want. No archive.org required.

Secondly, Bear would become like youtube: it would become for fame, not for creating for fun.

I could see that if, maybe, people start trying to farm bear likes to get on the front of the Discovery page. I mean, my long term goal is to get at least one post to the Trending section of the Discovery page, but that's just me being a a crazy, insecure person. I don't see most people caring about bear likes, though. .....but imagine becoming BEAR FAMOUS (aka bear-y famous). Σ(゚Д゚)

And finally, Bear would be flooded with low quality, AI-generated posts, killing it.

I'm hoping the text driven nature of Bear would deter this. AI bros seem too care more about AI generated images (especially of sexy anime girls) than they do text. Maybe they can leave blogs alone.

I really don't understand why people romanticize the Cohost's team. It seemed pretty doomed to fail. Closed source to the bitter end. Out of control hosting and dev costs. (Seemingly) lack of direction. It's nice that they wanted to make a cool site, but Bear Blog succeeds in a lot of places where Cohost failed. This place isn't (really) a business either. It's Herman's lifework. Bear is just better.

I'm ok with Bear getting more popular. That just means more cool people doing cool stuff.

Sorry for the unsolicited reply post. I just wanted a blog thing to reply to with slightly misaligned ASCII art (which you should totally use <pre> tags for btw).
