Chappell Roan is Michael Jackson But Better and Less Fake
Warning: I was a little high when I wrote this
Ok, so you know your boy only put on Chappell Roan on for the hommies as a joke. A frigging joke, played after Charli XCX, that was what was what. It was Brat Summer but with aging millennial men who think pretending to be gay is hilarious because it kind of is lol. But Chappel Roan actually does have decent songs, it turns out. I just didn't like how overproduced the studio album was. Actual Chappel Roan performances give the songs a lot more room to breathe. Roan does them natty too. There's her and a backing track, and her voice is super prominent. And fuck, she runs all around the stage. She does prime Michael Jackson levels of cardio mixed with natural singing. I love the band, too. It's like the Go-Go's, Chatmonchy, Tricot, Regal Lily, Princess Princess.. tbh I mostly know Japanese all girl rock bands. Oh, and I guess Houkago Tea Time. Japanese bands are really good at doing workrate stuff.
This live show is so fucking good that I had to post it here. There's crowd work, there's stage direction, there's audience participation through a catchy dance she teaches everyone - it all creates a great package. It's like a more musical theater experience that adds a lot of emotion to the songs. Like the flashing red lights during the Barracuda cover, that took things up a notch. And they were even forward thinking enough to roughly choreograph some of the band's movements during certain songs. But why did people bring their kids? That was pretty fucked up. I get that being explicit is sorta her thing, the Roan lyrics are why I can't put on this amazing performance for my family to watch. I'm not sitting next to anyone and listening to her sing the pussy eating song. It's a good song, but that's just too fucking ew lol.
I just realized that she's also wearing wrestling gear. Like, no joke. Chappell Roan looks like she's about to report to NXT. Maybe that's why I was so sports entertained. This was a wrestling/music cross over. lol naaaaah. This was more likely Broadway inspired. It's weird how many more people seem to like musical theater lately.
Note to self: watch more live performance recordings with friends and family. Put on your favorite Little Shop of Horrors bootleg with the original cast. Put on your favorite YMO show. Put on a Spalding Gray rambling. Show everyone the only funny British comedian: Stewart Lee. Subject everyone you know to Will Ospreay vs Takeshita or FTR vs The Briscoes III.
This Roan live is a live I like. And a live I like is a live I share. If you like this Roan-cording please share it with your friends so that they may like it and then they may also share the recording so that it is shared more.
